Most people say there's nowhere to camp for free in Texas. We have found a few and one that even has full hook-ups at no charge. Wheter you are headed south for the winter or just looking for a few days to get away we recommend these four places. All free or under $12!
Granbury Texas - Last spring as we were working our way to Dallas for a meeting I had we found that the Brazos River Authority oversees Lake Granbury where there are a few free boondocking opportunities.
Tomball Texas - If you are headed south then you can move on to Tomball, TX where the county operates free for 7 days a full-hook up camping area at Spring Creek Park. The city is a northwestern suburb of Houston, however it's a quaint little town with lots of boutiques and antique stores. Tomball also hosts many events each year. You must reserve in advance to stay at this park!
Victoria, TX - We lived in Victoria when we first moved to Texas. One of our Missouri friends came to dinner when he was headed south for the winter and told us about this city-operated RV park which we have now stayed at a few times. For only $12 a night it's a great stop-over and place to hook-up and do laundry. Since it's within a park there are lots of great places to hike. Lots of deer in the area also!
Magnolia Beach, TX - This place is well known by snowbirds. Several of them stay here the entire winter and others use it as a stopping point for their trip south and return trip north. Since I LOVE THE BEACH I love it here. It's on the bay where you can enjoy the ocean breeze. Currently there's no fee although there are rumors that the county may start charging a minimal amount.
