In the spring of 2019 we were making our way from the Alfa Owners Club Rally in Fredericksburg Texas to Mineral Wells to watch my grandson drift and then we had a couple weeks before I had to be at a meeting in Dallas. In our search to find a place to stay we found Lake Granbury less than an hour away. Lake Granbury is operated by the Brazos River Authority which was created by the Texas Legislature in 1929 as the first government entity in the United States specifically for the purpose of developing and managing the water resources of an entire river basin. (History Lesson if you travel with children.) Today, the BRA water supply system includes 11 reservoirs scattered across the 42,000-square-mile river basin. Three of the man-made lakes were built, and are owned and operated, by the BRA. The other eight are owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The BRA reservoir system includes: Possum Kingdom Lake, Lake Granbury and Lake Limestone. All three lakes have some type of primitive camping. (no hook-ups). The parks do have restrooms. One park was closed for repairs, so we went to Hunter Park. Basically, you park along the road, next to the grassy area with picnic tables and grills. It worked out great for us. I'd recommend you get there on a weekday if possible because the area fills up fast on the weekends. There are also many tent campers in the grassy area. There's a fishing pier and boat access and some people were swimming. There are also restrooms although we didn't use them. The area was very well maintained. We hit the perfect time also for some beautiful wildflowers!
Granbury is a quaint little town that is only 35 miles southwest of Fort Worth. We took a stroll around the square where they were also having an Easter Egg hunt on the courthouse square. Our phones (Verizon) and internet worked fine!
